Scottish Enterprise By Design Grant

The By Design Grant offered by Scottish Enterprise could contribute up to £5,000 to assist Scottish Companies in developing new products, processes or services.

Who can apply for the By Design Grant?

In order to apply for the By Design Grant your Company needs to be looking to develop a new product or service, be VAT registered and be based in Scotland. A non-VAT registered applicant may be considered if their business has been pre-approved for a VAT exemption by a Scottish Enterprise Innovation specialist or a Business Gateway advisor. You must be able to contribute at least 30% of the project cost upfront and demonstrate the benefits the project will have for your company. Your company does not need to be trading currently. You do, however, have to be able to describe how the Grant will assist you in bringing your product to market successfully. It is also worth noting this grant is available to social enterprise companies.

What the By Design Grant can be used for::

  • Designing or improving a product or service
  • Hiring a designer to consult on your business process
  • Considering brand strategy or packaging design (although this must be within the context of a larger product development project)
  • Market research to better understand your target market
  • Expert input on product development for instance help with writing a design brief, product design specification or creating CAD files / manufacturing drawings
  • Designing and developing prototypes that are used to progress the design process rather than to create resale value
  • Developing a company website, however this must not exceed 10% of the total project cost

 

What Scottish Enterprise won’t fund:

  • Costs associated with travel
  • Capital expenditure
  • Staff training costs
  • Loan or Grant repayments
  • Costs incurred to meet regulatory requirements and health and safety
  • Maintenance contracts
  • Staff recruitment costs or staffing costs
  • Printing costs for marketing materials
  • Business software costs
  • Working with creative agencies outwith the EU
